Ocean Revive’s Modular Coral Restoration Systems Featured in Peer-Reviewed Study

We’re proud to share that Ocean Revive’s modular coral gardening systems have been featured in a new peer-reviewed scientific publication: “A Framework for Assessing Scalable Coral Restoration Technologies in the Red Sea” (Milne et al., 2023).

The study assessed the performance, scalability, and real-world suitability of various coral restoration technologies used during the early phases of the KAUST Reefscape Restoration Initiative. Among the three systems tested in the field, Ocean Revive’s modular platform (Technology A) demonstrated strong results across key criteria, including:

  • Scalability of deployment

  • Structural durability and material performance

  • Compatibility with heat-tolerant coral species

  • Ease of assembly and logistical transport

What the Study Found: Validation for Ocean Revive’s Restoration Technology

The study used a standardised framework to compare three types of restoration units in the Red Sea over a 13-month deployment. Key outcomes related to Ocean Revive’s system included:

  • High structural integrity after 13 months with minimal material degradation

  • Low cost per unit area, enabling large-scale application

  • Efficient logistics due to modular and stackable components

  • Strong coral survivorship, particularly with heat-tolerant Acropora and Pocillopora species

The paper notes that our design was well-suited to low-complexity, high-coverage reef restoration, making it a strong candidate for projects with ambitious spatial targets and tight resource constraints.

What This Means for Coral Restoration

The Red Sea is one of the most promising regions for climate-resilient reef restoration, thanks to its naturally heat-tolerant coral populations. Ocean Revive’s tools were designed specifically for this environment, and the study confirms they’re fit for purpose in real-world field conditions.

As the demand for scalable coral restoration grows globally, independent validation like this strengthens the case for wide adoption of modular, field-ready BlueTech solutions.
